Understanding Overtime in Saudi Arabia

Overtime pay is calculated from monthly basic salary. The basic hourly wage is increased by a 50% premium, which equals 1.5 times the basic hourly wage. Allowances such as housing and transport are excluded from the calculation.

What Counts as Overtime?

Hours beyond 8/day or 48/week (6/day or 36/week in Ramadan for Muslims), all hours on public holidays, and hours above the weekly standard.

💵

Basic Salary Only

Overtime is calculated on basic salary. Housing, transport, food, and other allowances are excluded from the hourly wage base.

🎉

Public Holidays

All working hours performed on public holidays and official vacations are considered overtime hours at the Article 107 rate.

🔄

Compensatory Leave

Paid compensatory leave may replace overtime wages only with the worker's consent. Otherwise the cash formula is the default.

Common Exceptions

Some senior management roles, preparatory or intermittent work, guards, cleaners, domestic workers, and special work patterns may follow different rules or separate regulations. Always check your specific role classification and contract.

Overtime Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate my basic hourly wage?

Divide your monthly basic salary by your monthly working hours. For example, SAR 6,000 ÷ (26 working days × 8 hours) = SAR 28.85 basic hourly wage. Overtime is then this figure × 1.5.

Are public holiday hours counted as overtime?

Yes. HRSD guidance states all working hours performed on public holidays are considered overtime hours. Keep clear records of holiday shifts and approved hours.

Should I include allowances in the calculation?

No. Overtime is calculated on basic salary only. Housing, transport, food, and other allowances must be excluded from the hourly wage base.

What is the maximum overtime per year?

HRSD guidance says additional working hours may not exceed 720 hours per year, unless the worker consents to increase the number beyond that limit.

What working days per month should I enter?

Use the number of days your employer uses to calculate monthly working hours. Many six-day schedules use 26 days, but your contract or payroll policy may use a different basis.

Does overtime affect my End of Service Benefit?

Usually no. ESB is based on separate wage rules and is calculated independently from overtime. Use the ESB Calculator for gratuity estimates.
