Finding a Job in Saudi Arabia as an Expat: What Actually Works

✍️ Expatriates KSA · 📅 08 Jul 2026 · 👁️ 3 views

Start With Your Visa Reality

Before applying anywhere, it helps to know which category you fall into: are you already in Saudi Arabia on a dependent or existing work Iqama looking to switch jobs, or applying from abroad for a fresh work visa? The process, timeline and employer expectations differ significantly between the two.

Where Employers Actually Post Jobs

  • Local classifieds and job boards: smaller and mid-size Saudi businesses often post directly rather than through large international platforms.
  • LinkedIn: strong for corporate, engineering, finance and multinational roles.
  • Recruitment agencies: especially useful for healthcare, construction, and skilled trades, where agencies handle visa sponsorship.
  • Referrals: a significant share of hires in Saudi Arabia still happen through personal and professional networks — it is worth being active in expat and industry groups.

Documents to Have Ready

  • An updated CV, ideally formatted simply (avoid heavy graphics — many systems scan text)
  • Attested educational certificates, if applying from abroad (attestation can take weeks, so start early)
  • A clear digital copy of your passport and, if applicable, current Iqama
  • Reference contacts who can be reached by phone or email

Understanding Nitaqat and Why It Matters to You

Saudi companies are classified under the Nitaqat Saudization program, and this affects how easily they can hire and sponsor expat workers. Companies in better standing (often informally called "green" or "platinum") generally have smoother visa processing. It is reasonable to ask a prospective employer about their Nitaqat status if the process seems unusually slow.

Realistic Timelines

If you are being hired from abroad, expect the process — offer, work permit, visa stamping, travel, medical check, Iqama issuance — to take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on your nationality and the employer's efficiency. Switching employers while already inside Saudi Arabia is often faster but depends on your current sponsor's cooperation and any contractual notice period.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Employers asking for payment to "process" your visa — legitimate employers cover these costs.
  • Vague job descriptions with no clear salary range.
  • Reluctance to put offer details in writing before you resign from a current position.
