New 5-Year Physical Iqama Card in Saudi Arabia: Everything Expats Need to Know
The year 2026 has brought some of the most significant residency reforms to Saudi Arabia under Vision 2030. Among these, the introduction of the new 5-Year Physical Iqama (Resident ID) is the most talked-about update.
This change aims to reduce administrative paperwork and digitalize the immigration process, but it has left many expatriates wondering how the system works in practice. Here is a complete breakdown of the new 5-year physical Iqama card.
The 5-Year Physical Card vs. Annual Renewal
The most critical thing to understand is that the physical card and your digital residency status are now decoupled (separated).
The Physical Card: Stays in your wallet and is physically valid for 5 years from issuance. It features enhanced security elements, including an embedded chip, updated biometric data, and a QR code linking directly to your Absher portal.
Residency Status (Digital): Your actual permission to stay in Saudi Arabia must still be renewed annually or quarterly by your employer via the Absher Business or Qiwa platforms.
Important Note: Just because your physical card says it is valid for 5 years does not mean your residency is automatically active. If your employer fails to pay the annual fees or insurance, your status will show as "Expired" on the digital system, even if the physical card in your hand looks valid.
Who is Eligible for the 5-Year Card?
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) has structured eligibility based on the new skill-based classification:
| Tier / Category | Eligibility Criteria |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 (High-Skilled) | Eligible for the 5-year physical card upon first issuance. |
| Tier 2 (Skilled) | Eligible for the 5-year card after completing an initial 2-year period in KSA, subject to employer endorsement. |
| Tier 3 (Basic/Unskilled) | Standard annual cards apply; must satisfy continuous verification. |
How is the Physical Card Delivered?
Employers no longer need to collect and reissue physical cards every single year. Once the initial 5-year card is processed:
The renewal of residency is done entirely digitally.
If a new physical card is required, it is delivered directly to the employee's registered National Address via the Wasil postal service.
What Should Expats Do?
Keep your Absher Individual app active. While the physical card is your primary legal ID, your digital ID on Absher is equally valid for police checks and government offices within the Kingdom.
