Can You Transfer Sponsorship If Your Iqama is Expired in 2026?

One of the most common stressful situations for expats in Saudi Arabia is when their employer fails to renew their Iqama, leaving them in an irregular status.

Fortunately, the Qiwa platform under the 2026 labor guidelines provides a clear path for employees to secure their legal status and transfer their sponsorship, even if their Iqama has already expired.

The Legal Rules of Transferring on Expired Iqama

Under older laws, transferring sponsorship required the active consent of the current employer (red green Nitaqat rules). Today, the system allows an automatic transfer without the current sponsor's approval if:

  • Your Iqama has been expired for a significant period.

  • Your work permit has expired.

  • Your employer has failed to pay your wages for consecutive months.

How the Process Works in 2026

1.Receive a Qiwa Request:Initiated by New Employer.

Your new employer must log into their Qiwa Business account and send a formal "Employee Transfer Request" using your Iqama number.

2.Pay Outstanding Late Fines:Settled during Transfer.

Because your Iqama is expired, the system will calculate the late renewal fees (SAR 500+). Your new employer must agree to pay these outstanding fees as part of the transfer process.

3.Automatic Portal Approval:No Current Sponsor Consent Needed.

Because of the expired status, Qiwa bypasses the 14-day notice period normally sent to the current employer. The transfer is instantly approved by the system.

4.Update Status on Absher:Final Step.

Once the fees are settled online, your digital ID on Absher will immediately reflect your new sponsor's name, and you can request a new physical card.

Important Tip

Do not wait too long if your Iqama is expired. Initiate discussions with potential new employers quickly so they can pull your record via Qiwa before any final exit or legal proceedings are initiated.
